The Sari Diaries- Monday 7/11/16

Sunday, July 10 by Sari Hirsch

Dear Diary,

Today was a magnificent day and there is truly nowhere I would have rather been than at CRC on United Nations Day. From start to finish, things were so busy and fun- it was literally perfect. I am exhausted now, but here is how the day went…

It all began with Sophie, Simone, Cliff and all of the captains and advisors on the announcements singing the United Nations March song. We jumped out of bed and put on all of our team colors. I was on Spain and we wore red and yellow. I have to say that I looked pretty good…I was yellow and red from head to toe. After breakfast we had a short cabin clean-up and then went to the Center Fire Circle for the opening ceremonies. Cliff explained how the UN Day torch made its way from Tanzania to the Netherlands and from there it traveled to Mongolia and finally to Spain before Cliff canoed it all the way from Madrid to #TheRanch2016. It was cool how he told us important information about each country he traveled to in order to get the torch to us today. Once he was done explaining, the captains from each team passed the torch from behind the lodge all the way to the Center Fire Circle. It was awesome!

The first activity of the day was leg wrestling. I was pretty excited to play because I loved it last year. I have definitely improved though because I made it to the fifth round! Charlotte A from Tanzania won for Colt Village and Faye B from Spain won for Wrangler. Then something crazy happened…Cliff won the male staff round! It was so fun to watch him go head to head with the male staff…he was so good!

After leg wrestling, I played knockout which was crazy and fun! While I was on the basketball court, other campers were playing softball, steal the bacon and other cool games. At lunch we got to sit with our teams which I loved. I do enjoy sitting with my cabin at meals but I was so happy to sit with older campers and staff…we cheered together, talked about our mornings and get hyped for the afternoon ahead.

The afternoon was loaded with action! After lunch, we had running relays and tug of war. I couldn’t believe how fast some of my teammates were…I was proud of them! Second and third series activities didn’t disappoint either. I did scavenger hunt and banner making…there is something for everyone on UN Day! After third series, we went to the waterfront for swim relays, a blob competition and synchronized swimming. You should have seen Izzy R flying off the blob…it looked amazing and she said it was so fun!

Big news on the dinner front- we had BBQ! It is my absolute favorite meal and to celebrate UN Day, we had hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken and more. It was delicious! The staff finished the day off with flag football. I sat on the sidelines cheering for Spain with my team. I couldn’t believe how good my counselors were at this game…who knew the staff had so much athletic talent!?

Sadly, United Nations Day 2016 had to come to an end. Simone and Sophie did such an incredible job planning the day…we all got to have so much fun thanks to their hard work! Before they announced the point totals, we cheered for the captains and advisors. I was so impressed with all of them…even the Colt Village captains really took a leadership role. I hope that I will one day have the opportunity to be a captain…and if I get the chance, I really hope I can lead my team just like my captains led us today! As they read off the point totals, each team locked pinkies for good luck. I couldn’t believe it but Spain won! I never would have thought that after only two UN Days, I would have the chance to go to Cathy’s with my team to celebrate. It happened though and my mint chocolate chip ice cream never tasted so good.

When I got back to camp, everybody in my cabin was talking about what a wonderful day they had. It really doesn’t matter who wins UN Day…the truth is that campers and counselors at Chippewa really just love being spirited and silly while competing. There is no doubt that today was the best day of the summer so far. I loved every second of it and am already looking forward to United Nations Day 2017!

Love Your Happy Camper,
Chippy Girl
